He was the son of Alexandre and  Mary Epps of Person County, NC.   Mr. Epps is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace S. Booker of Raleigh, NC and by one granddaughter, Lora.  He is also survived by three brothers:  Mr. Alexander Epps, Virgilina, Va., Mr. Alfred Epps, Wilmington, Delaware; Mr. Caleb M. She was the first Indian to be named to the UNC Board of Governors and was a graduate of Pembroke State University.

 

She was the daughter of the late Rev. James Walter Smith and Lela Locklear Smith.  Mrs. Epps was the widow of Frank H. Epps, and is survived by three children:  Lena E. (Mrs. James) Brooker of Raleigh, Franklin D. of St. Pauls, NC  and LT. (J.G.) James Cameron, US Navy; grandchildren: Lora Elisabeth Brooker, Lindsey Eveleyn Brooker, Franklin Lee Epps, and James Cameron Epps, Jr.

She was married to the late Elias Harris, and they had twelve children, seven girls and five boys.  They are: Adnell, John, James, Elias, Jr., and Prentis; Mrs. Mandy Lowry, Mrs. Mary Alice Locklear, Mrs. Rose Ellen Bullard, Mrs. Elizabeth Sampson, Mrs. Lettie Mae Oxendine, Mrs. Susie Nell Lowry, and Mrs. Ruth B. Deese.  All children survive.  She also had a foster daughter, Miss Betty Chavis.

He was the son of Ms. Sarah Jane Harris.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Etha C. Harris.  Three children; Mrs. Gloria Bowen of Hampton, Va., Mrs. Jill Graham of Pembroke, NC and Mr. Willie Harris, Jr. of Pembroke, NC.  He also leaves behind two sisters; Mrs. Eva Brayboy of Pembroke and Mrs. Sally Locklear of Lumberton, NC.  Eight grandchildren and a host of special friends and relatives.

Lowry, Mrs. Calvin Lowry, all of Pembroke, NC and Mrs. Albert Hammonds of Lumberton, NC.  Five brothers; Gordon Hunt, Asberry Hunt, Edmond Hunt, Graddy Hunt, and Alfred M. Hunt of Fairmont.  15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

 

Hunt, Betty “Jo Jo”

B. March 12, 1950; D. December 30, 1996

 

She was the daughter of Alton and Eva Jones Hunt.  Her parents instilled pride in their American Indian heritage and taught her to value education as a means of rising above the indignation and prejudice that surround Native peoples.  Jo Jo attended public schools in Robeson county and graduated Valedictorian of the 1967 class of Pembroke High School.  In 1970 she graduated cum laude from Pembroke State University with a B.S. degree in English and mathematics.  Following undergraduate studies, she enrolled in Duke University’s School of Law and received her Juris Doctor degree in 1973.

 

After being admitted to the North Carolina Bar in August 1973, Jo Jo accepted employment as a staff assistant and assistant counsel with the Senate Subcommittee on Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C.  This initial employment was the beginning of an outstanding career of advocacy and service for American Indians and Alaskan Natives in the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C.

 

She served as a consultant for the American Indian Policy Review Commission where she chaired the Task Force on Terminated and non federally Recognized Indians; Executive Director of the Coalition of Eastern Native Americans, Inc.; Staff Associate for Coordination and preparation of the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration and the Indian Criminal justice Program in the Public Administration Service.  Staff Attorney for the Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs, Attorney Advisor (General) for the Office of Hearings and Appeals in the Social Security Administration; Executive Director of the National Advisory Council on Indian Education;  Consultant and Volunteer for the National American Indian Council, and Health Insurance Specialist in the Division of Legislation and Regulations of the Indian Health Service, and Health Insurance Specialist for American Indian and Alaskan Natives in the Office of the Bureau Director of the Medicaid Bureau and Office of Beneficiary Services for the Health care Financing Administration.

 

From 1982-88 Jo Jo served as Attorney-Advisor (General) for the Office of Hearings and Appeals in the Social Security Administration in Santa Ana, Ca. And was general partner in the Holland Chiropractic Clinic in San Juan Capistrano, Ca.

 

Sincerity, education, compassion, sensitivity, perseverance, and passionate advocacy for American Indians and Alaskan Native Drove Jo Jo Hunt’s life work and service.  The life she lived and modeled and the service she gave to humanity touched many in whose hearts and minds she will forever be remembered.  Like her father, Jo Jo “left the world far better than she found it.”

He was one of thirteen children born to the late Mary and Lacy Jacobs.  He met and married Dosha Barton in 1956 and in 1959 they made a home in Baltimore, Md.  They had five children.  Sonny is survived by his wife, Dosha, brothers Genery and Sam of Maryland, Eugene, Rother and Murphy of NC.  Sisters, Salley Strickland, fannie Locklear, Gracie Revels, Lucy Lowery and Sylvia Strickland all of NC.  Sons Ricky and Stevie of NC and daughters, Reneice Ramsay, Sherry Haber and Trenda Jacobs all of Baltimore.  The joys of his last years were eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was presented with PSU’s first honorary doctorate in absentia.  It was a Doctor of Humanities received by Dr. Jones’ eldest son. Rev. Steve Jones.

 

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Sheppard Jones, three children; S. Stephen Jones, Judy J. Revels, and Randall S. Jones, and three grandsons; Sean, Shay, and Channing.  He is also survived by one brother, Sandy Jones.

Survivors include, three daughters, Ms. Pauline Sheppard and Mrs. Margaret Jones, both of Rt. 3, Rowland, NC and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Kline of Fayetteville, NC, one son, Mr. Earl R. Sheppard of Rt. 3 Rowland, NC, one sister, Mrs. Dora Carter of Fayetteville, 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
