Possible  spelling of Lowry

black marble graphics bar

The Lowrys came from northern Ireland and certainly from Scotland before then.  Lowry and Lavery in Irish is “O Labhradha”.  They are found in almost equal numbers in northeast Ulster where the sept originated.  Their territory in mediaeval times was in the neighborhood of Moira, Co. Down.  Branches of the sept were called Baun-Lavery, Roe-Lavery and Trin-Lavery, these epithets being Gaelic adjectives ban (white), rua (red) and tran (strong).

The Lowry surname is also found in Ulster as a result of the 17th century settlers arriving there from Scotland.  Scottish families are found here under the spelling of Laurie as well.  The Earl Belmore family is recorded as arriving from Scotland at the time and settling in County Tyrone, and he was said to be of the Laurie family of Maxwelton.  The Scottish people from Ulster are often referred to as “Scot-Irish”.

The first record of the name Laurie was found in Dumfriesshire around 1000 AD where the archives record several spellings of the name.  Scribes and church officials spelt the name phonetically (from its sound) and thus we have the name variation found today.  LAURIE, LAWRIE, LARRIE, LARRY, LAURY, LAWRY, LOWRIE, and LOWRY are just some of the more commonly seen variations in Scotland and abroad.  This was particularly true for the Lauries who moved to Ireland during the time of the Ulster Plantation of 1609, whose surnames through time changed to Lavery, Lowry, and O’Lowry.  Other names associated with the Lauries are Bissett, Lavender and Green. Clans from Scotland containing forms of the surname Lowry are GORDON (Septs include:  Lawrie, Laurie) and MACLAREN (Septs include: Lawrie, Laurie, Lowery, Lowry).

Lowry (Lawrie and Lowrie) is an old Scottish name, for fox; it also means a crafty person.

LOWRY

Because of the affection of the people in the Middle Ages for St. Lawerence “Laurel, symbol of victory,” deacon of Pope Sixtus II, who was martyred in the third century, the English surname of Lawrence and the Welsh surname of Laurence arose.  The spelling of Laurence for the given name is slightly more popular in England, while Americans prefer the name spelled with a w. The saint’s name is spelled both ways, Lawson, and Larsen are popular in the Scandinavian countries.  The pet forms Laurie, Lawrie, Lowry, and Lowrie are common in Scotand.  McLauren in the Scottish Highlands refers to the son of Lawrence, German variants are Leverenz, Lorenz, and the short forms, Rentz, and Rentsch.  The French form is Laurent, but a contributory source is one who came from Lorraine, the medieval duchy adjoining France.  The Polish cognate form is the formidable Wawrzyniak.

LOWRIE

Lowrie is a variant of Laurie, q.v.  We find it as a forename in 1467 in which year Lowry Smith was juror on an inquisition anent fishing in the Tweed (RD., 461), and in 1567 Lourie Quhyt was a tenant of the abbot of Kelso (Kelso, p. 524).  Gilbert Lowrie in Coldingham witnessed a retour of special service in 1497 (Home, 28), David Lowry appears in Irvine as king’s officer in 1529 (Irvine, II, p.36), and Robert Lowry possessed land there in 1540 (ibid., 169).  Thomas Loure, a charter witness at Doune, 1540 (RMS., III, 2278).  John Loury was officer of the lordship of Ballincreiff in 1557 (ER., xix, p. 23), and Joseph Lowrye was minister at the kirk of Lenzie in 1620 (SBR., p. 152).  James Lowrey was admitted burgess freeman of Glasgow in 1600 (Burgesses), John Lourie is recorded in Melrose in 1441, and Thomas Lourie was a Quaker in the same burgh in 1684 (RRM., I, p. 89; III, p. 43).  The kirk bell given to S. Nicholas church, Aberdeen, by Provost Leyth in 1351, was called the ‘Lourie’.  Additional evidence that Lowri is merely a variant of Laurie is shown by the entry in the Dumfries Retours in 1672 where mention is made of “Robertus Lowrie” de Maxweltoun haeres Joannis Lowrie de Maxweltoun,” where, of course, the persons named are members of the old and well-known family of “Annie Laurie.”

1871 "While Congress was investigating the operations of the Ku-Klux, the Hon. Giles Leach, then a prominent lawyer residing at Lumberton, Robeson County, NC, was summoned to appear before a congressional committee in Washington to testify in regard to the condition of affairs in Robeson County.  He was naturally very unfriendly to the Indians, because he admitted in his testimony that he was employed by the State of North Carolina to prosecute some of them.  Notwithstanding his prejudice, when asked the question as to what race the Lowries and the other Indians belonged to, he said:  'Well sir, I desire to tell you the truth as near as I can.  I think they are a mixture of Spanish and Indian.  They have straight black hair and many of the characteristics of the Cherokiee Indians in our State.'  Shen asked the question as to what blood there was in the Lowrie family, he said:  'I think the father was an Indian.  I think the family had about all the characteristics of the Cherokee Indians of our state.  The mother was named Cumboe, and I think it very likely that there may have been some white blood in the Cumboe family. ( Senate Documents Vol. 4 December 7, 1914-March 4, 1915, pp. 129-130)The Lowrie family is Indian'.  (The Lowrie family that Mr. Leach was talking about was Allen Lowrie's.  He was the father of Henry Berry Lowrie who was the leader of an outlaw gang during the Civil War.  Henry Berry Lowrie began the gang after his father and brother were brutally murdered by the "home guard".
